Now that spring is finally here, it’s time to start transitioning your wardrobe from winter into the current season. That doesn’t necessarily mean put away all sweaters and coats, because as we know spring can be very fickle. But there are a few tricks to making those winter-looks more spring friendly.

Transitional Coats: Last week I talked about transitional coats, and these are the perfect items to add into your wardrobe right now. Lightweight, but will still keep you warm on a cool night.

Step up your fish intake for brain function

The impact of fish intake on brain function has been a popular area of research over the last several decades. Most recently, a 2020 analysis of over 7,000 participants found that higher fish intake was associated with higher brain function and slower rates of mental decline. A separate 2017 study of over 500 children found that “frequent fish consumption was related to both fewer sleep problems and higher IQ scores.”

Try to enjoy two or more servings per week of higher Omega-3 and lower mercury fish such as salmon, anchovies, sardines and freshwater trout. Experts suggest baking or broiling when preparing the fish.

            Em 2017, o dicionário Oxford escolheu como palavra do ano o termo “Youthquake”, o qual pode ser traduzido por “terremoto jovem”. A expressão denota a capacidade da juventude para a inovação e para a mudança, principalmente em termos políticos. Dentro dessa perspectiva, cabe analisar o potencial dos mais novos na transformação da sociedade e os entraves que impedem a plena participação cidadã das gerações em idade de formação.

            De fato, a juventude demonstra imensa capacidade de alterar o destino coletivo. Prova disso é a atuação da sueca Greta Thunberg: aos 16 anos, ela iniciou uma série de manifestações em frente ao parlamento de seu país em favor de leis mais severas contra ações prejudiciais ao clima. Como consequência, protestos em vários locais do mundo, organizados por jovens, se uniram em torno da mesma pauta, demonstrando o desejo dessa geração de pressionar os políticos em favor de mudanças.

            Contudo, o engajamento da juventude ainda está aquém do desejado. Dentro dessa perspectiva, tal problema se deve à falta de um ensino que motive a participação nas decisões coletivas, conforme afirmava o educador Paulo Freire. Segundo o professor, a educação deve começar pela leitura do mundo, de modo a explicitar aos estudantes as condições de limitação, opressão e perigo a que estão submetidos. Entretanto, dado que as escolas se eximem desse papel, a consciência política e o engajamento dos jovens ficam limitados.

            Portanto, a participação de jovens na política é uma das grandes potências para a transformação da sociedade, conforme atestam a escolha do dicionário Oxford e a atuação de Greta Thunberg. Por isso, é necessário um ensino escolar com olhar voltado à realidade, aos moldes do pensamento de Paulo Freire, para estimular o engajamento das novas gerações na política.

Breakfast foods to eat and avoid

Many studies on breakfast foods have one over-arching theme: what you eat for your morning meal is the most important. Sugary cereals, pastries, bagels, along with high fat, processed meats tend to be popular breakfast food items.

Most of these items contain refined grains and have added sugar. This could cause a rapid blood sugar spike, leading to mid-morning hunger. They also can contain a lot of extra sodium, which could affect blood pressure.

Research shows that having a high-fiber breakfast along with a good amount of protein and some heart-healthy fats leads to better health.

Start with breakfast cereal

If you don’t have a lot of time in the mornings, a high-fiber cereal with low added sugar can provide your body with a good start to the day. Buy cereals with at least 5 grams of fiber.

Many breakfast cereals have added protein to help pump up your protein intake. These cereals are often made from whole grains, which give your body many vitamins and minerals such as iron and folic acid.

Aim to purchase cereals that are made from 100% whole grains to get the most fiber. Add some 1% milk or unsweetened plant-based milk to increase your protein intake.
